Frequently Asked Questions...
Does putting acoustic strings on an electric bass make it an acoustic bass?
Even though it doesn't have that hollow in the center that acoustic instruments do...
Without connecting it to an amp, that is. So it could function as an acoustic instrument.
Answer:
Nope, that won't work at all. The volume that you'll get from the bass unplugged using acoustic strings will not change. Acoustic basses sound loud on their own because of the big, hollow body they have. Electric basses are thick pieces of wood and can't produce any loud sounds on their own.
Not only that, but your electric bass may not work with an amplifier if you use acoustic strings. The pickups on an electric bass have a magnetic field, and you need to use stainless steel or nickel strings for them to work. Acoustic strings are phosphor bronze, and the pickups won't be able to pick up their sound.
