Why do my Guitar strings break when?

I am trying to learn how to tune my guitar by ear and every time i dune down the high e strings it snaps.The strings i use are Ernie Balls Slinky Acoustic Extra Light.Now i have four sets of strings missing the high e string.Can i get some recommendation on better strings too?I can't keep paying $14.00 for strings that break.Thanks for all advice!

Guitar strings get used to a certain tension. Tuning and bending break most strings by % i would say either gauge up to at least a light set or start buying individual high e's also changing brands may help. I wouldn't buy the pink packaged slinky's those are electric strings and are going to song bad. Elixirs sound great on acoustics but break more than any other string i have come across. If you really don't want to break strings the only way is buy the cheapest set of strings the have put them on if they sound bad you won't be able to break them to save your life.
